Completion of New North East Climate Centre NCC

Construction of the new Northeast Climate Centre (NCC) at The Market House in the town centre of Dunleer, Co. Louth was completed in the Spring of 2024. The NCC serves as both a centre for information and inspiration on how everyone can address climate change and a community space available for events. The NCC was an initiative between the Energy Team and the Dunleer Community Development Board and funded by the Department of Rural and Community Affairs through a Town & Village Renewal Scheme.

Some of the events already held at the NCC:

  • The official launch of Dunleer Town Centre First Plan hosted by Louth County Council was held at the NCC.
  • Those who completed Dunleer’s annual Darkness into Light Walk for Pieta gathered at the NCC for refreshments.
  • The Board of Directors of the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) visited to learn more about how the Energy Team continues to spread the message of energy sustainability.
  • An Taoiseach Simon Harris TD visited the NCC and received an overview of the Energy Actions exhibition the Energy Team use to inform and inspire schools and community groups.
  • Energy Team conducted the first meeting of SEC groups from around County Louth
  • Drogheda Credit Union hosted a Greener Good evening open to the public which featured a panel of experts providing information and answering questions on home energy retrofits.
  • Local music community organisation, Scóraíocht Lann Léire, used the centre as part of its 50th Anniversary celebration weekend.
  • Dunleer Tidy Towns held its 2024 Annual Awards night at the NCC to recognise those homeowners whose gardens were worth of an award.
  • The centre was decorated for the annual Santa Event at The Market House. Hundreds of local children and parents enjoyed the kick off to the Christmas season.
  • Funded through the International Fund for Ireland and in partnership with Dee Hub, Ardee, the Energy Team is providing a programme on energy sustainability and biodiversity for youth in the Dunleer and Mid-Louth area at the NCC.

A short background into the development of the project.

Work began in early February of 2024 with the main timeframe for completion to be finished and ready in only a few months.

Once completed it will be the new home for sustainable energy education and communication sessions that will be used to enhance the awareness of the benefits of retrofitting homes and large buildings with better energy efficient heating systems that will greatly decrease your carbon footprint while also benefitting from cheaper energy bills.

Progress of the new building has been moving along nicely even considering the mixed weather we’ve been having in recent times but the professionalism and determination of the construction crew are making sure that everything will be ready soon.

It hasn’t taken long for the buildings foundations to be place allowing for fast progress onto the next stage of the process.

With the construction nearing completion, all of the outer/inner walls, insulation and outer protection is being added to finalize the construction process as it nears its final stages of completion.

There is still work to do with weather proofing the building but it won’t take long before we get to see the final results.

Work on the inside of the building is also well under way will all of the signs, flooring and electrical work being put in place.

The floor material still needs to be placed which will happen in the coming days.

There some more finishing touches that need to be added but everything is coming together nicely.

The outside of the building is ready along with the new beautifully painted mural on the wall right next to the center brings it all to life in the best possible way and makes everything stand out with the nice sunny weather, making it a delight to look at.

We will update everyone nearer to the completion of the building as there will be launch day to open the building to the local community.

The Energy Teams first official meeting in the new building.
